The Grandfather Clocks Company provides grandfather clocks
with a variety of clock movements and chimes, from classic chain and cable clock
movements that have been used to operate grandfather clocks for centuries or
more modern quartz based movements. We also offer grandfather clocks that play a
variety of class clock chimes, which are available in single, dual and triple
chime movements.
Cable Driven Clock Movements
Grandfather clocks with
cable driven movements are operated by weights held by a cable as the weights
fall they operate the clock and keep time. Often made of brass cable driven
clock movements keep time accurately and faithfully. This is a traditional
method of powering a grandfather clock, as the clock requires no battery or
electricity to power the clock (unless of course it is illuminated in which case
the light will be powered by electricity). A cable driven clock is wound
approximately once a week with a brass crank or key that fits into the dial of a
clock. The weights are pulled to the top of the clock.
Chain Driven Clock Movements
Grandfather clocks with
cable driven movements are operated in a very similar fashion to cable driven
clock movements except that the weights that operate the clock and keep time are
held by chains. Instead of using a key or crank to raise the weights once a
week, the chain driven grandfather clock simply requires the chain attached to
the weights to be pulled down once a week to raise the weights. The weights will
then fall over the course of the week and that is what powers the clock.
Quartz Clock Movements
Quartz movements are operated by
battery and give you the benefits of a traditional grandfather clock but without
requiring weekly winding. An electronic oscillator and a quartz crystal are used
to power the quartz powered grandfather clock and keep precise time. In 1928
Bell Laboratories built the first quartz clock which is accurate to within 1-2
thousandths of a second per day. Quartz clock movements require batteries, and
electronic impulses pass from a battery through a quartz crystal powering the
movement of the clock at regular intervals.
Grandfather Clock Chimes
Grandfather clocks typically
play one, two or three different chimes or tunes. A clock’s movement maybe
referred to as a single, dual or triple chime movement, which indicates the
number of chimes or tunes that that clock will play.
Each clock maker uses variants on many of the chime tunes
so the chimes will vary slightly by clock maker. But most clock makers use a
standard selection of chimes that include Westminster Chimes, Whittington
Chimes, Westminster Chimes, St Michael Chimes, Ave Maria Chimes, Ode To Joy
Chimes, and Bim Bam Chimes. These chimes often have a very rich history
themselves and add to the heirloom quality of each grandfather clock. For
example the Westminster Chimes are the same notes first used on the clock in the
University Church tower of St. Mary, Cambridge, England, and in 1859, selected
for the Victoria Clock Tower in the House of Parliament in London better known
as Big Ben. There, the hour is still struck on the famous old bell, "Big Ben".
While the Ave Maria Chimes are based upon Schubert’s song which tell the tale of
Ellen Douglas;
In the early 1500's. King James V banished the Douglas Clan
to Scotland where Ellen Douglas lived in hiding. He did so because Archibald
Douglas, Earl of Angus had imprisoned the child king during the early days of
his rein. In 1825 Franz Peter Schubert wrote Ellen's Song, which was a prayer
for the safety of herself and her father as they hid in the forest.
